2024-25 Yr 11 Work Experience
The objective of the Work Experience programme is to provide students with a meaningful experience of voluntary work at the same time as providing useful service to the community. We regard community service as an important learning experience for students as it helps to reinforce a sense of responsibility and an awareness of the needs of others.

For Work Experience to be meaningful and valuable, it should:

Help students identify his/her strengths and weaknesses.
What We Want You to Learn:

Your strengths and weaknesses
-
Is this the right environment for you?
-
Can you communicate effectively?
-
Can you use your initiative?

Work Experience should:
-
Be in a safe environment where you can learn about a type of work
-
Be no longer than 8 hours a day
-
Have a break for lunch
-
Be in the daytime, not shift work at night
-
Be in Hong Kong, not in another country
-
Be unpaid
-
Be willing to take you through company Health and Safety procedures
-
Be willing to be contacted and potentially visited by school

The Year 11 Work Experience aims to train students to be reasonably independent and responsible. Nevertheless, parents’ involvement and consent are essential. To this end, we ask students to go through the whole process (this includes job-hunting, submitting appropriate forms etc.) in collaboration with their parents. Parents will also be the first point of contact in case of emergency. While this task can be daunting, any experience of the real world of work is valuable, so we suggest you consider your wider networks to see if employers of people you know would be open to work experience students. If the company has any questions about the support the school can offer, please contact Ms Gloria Chui (gchui@sis.edu.hk).

We have a small number of placements for families who do not have wider networks and we will be allocating these in late September 2024.
IMPORTANT NOTES
-
Please contact companies that you are interested in working for - if you need support in doing so, please contact the Careers Office, Ms Lauren Sharman (lsharman@sis.edu.hk); they will be happy to help.
-
Sometimes companies misunderstand the term 'work experience', and think it has legal implications around age or pay. If you are turned down by a company for reasons along these lines, please contact Ms Gloria Chui at gchui@sis.edu.hk for a letter that will possibly help. We will fill in a form "Confirmation of Student Status for Work Experience Students" for students to provide to the company. Please click HERE to see the information of the form.
-
The school will arrange insurance for each student, this does not need to be done by the employer. Please click HERE for the benefits table for your reference.
-
There will be no extra forms for employers to complete. We need one contact person and for students to be allocated a supervisor who will assign tasks and go through Health and Safety Information. We will not ask for an evaluation from this person.
-
If you are interested to do your work experience at any of the ESF schools, please contact Ms Gloria Chui at gchui@sis.edu.hk. Please don't contact/email the school directly.
-
Please let the school know where you will be doing your work experience by Friday, 16th August 2024 by filling in the 'register your own placement' form below. This will allow us to buy insurance and conduct visits during MaD week.
-
Remember, you are an ambassador for South Island School. See 'Important Notes for Students' for some advice.
-
The "Student Employer Induction Pack" is something for you to do with your placement in the first day, to learn about your place of work and be safe while there. We will send the "Student Employer Induction Pack" to your employer before MaD Week. An outline can be found in "Important Notes for Students".
